KINTAMPO / GHANA — 53 people were killed in a crash near Kintampo, Ghana, involving a cargo truck and a Metro Mass bus enroute to Tamale.

A surviving passenger on the bus told police that the bus had brake problems prior to the crash. A mechanic was called to look at the brakes but was unable to fix the problem.

The driver continued the journey with faulty brakes. While entering into a sharp bend in the road, the bus collided head-on with a cargo truck carrying tomatoes.

"Many of the passengers on the bus died on the spot," regional police chief Maxwell Atingane told Reuters.

At least 53 people have been confirmed dead. 18 adults and 5 children survived the crash and are being treated for injuries.
