Trump vs. Pope Francis in an epic war of words over US-Mexico border issue

WALTERBORO, SOUTH CAROLINA — Donald Trump called Pope Francis a pawn of Mexico's leaders last week, which led the Pope to indirectly cast doubt over Trump's dedication to Christianity. Today, the back and forth continues.

Speaking out about the Pope's five-day trip to Mexico, Trump said he didn't think the Pope understood the problems the U.S. is facing with the border.

"I don't think he understands the danger of the open border that we have with Mexico," he said. "I think Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is because they're making a fortune and we're losing."

An "open border," as in Europe, is a border that enables free movement of people between different jurisdictions with limited or no restrictions on movement. America does not share an open border with Mexico.

Trump added the following, regarding what kinds of people that come over to the U.S. from Mexico:

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best (...)They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

Among Trump's campaign promises is the erection of a 2000-mile border wall. In response, Pope Francis is quoted as saying, "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian."

The Donald didn't care for the Pope's weigh-in, saying, "For a religious leader to question a person's faith is disgraceful. I am proud to be a Christian."

Trump also stated, "If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS's ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened. ISIS would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians."

The Pope's visit to Mexico from Feb. 12 to 17, where he held a 70,000-person mass along both sides of a section of the border, was dubbed "Two Nations, One Faith" by the Vatican. The church is trying to encourage solidarity between the two nations despite their border issues.
