U.S. move to rename Washington plaza after Liu Xiaobo pisses off China
  • 8 years ago
WASHINGTON — China is up in arms after the U.S. Senate passed a bill that could change the Chinese Embassy's address in Washington, D.C. from 3505 International Plaza to 1 Liu Xiaobo Plaza.

Liu Xiaobo is a dissident who China considers a criminal and is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence on charges of inciting state subversion.

He's best known for co-writing a manifesto advocating human rights, free speech and an end to China's one-party rule. For his long and non-violent struggle, Liu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010.

The bill was proposed by Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz. His proposal to rename plaza in front of the embassy is meant to make a stand against China's wrongful incarceration of dissidents. In order to become law, however, it would need approval from both Congress and President Barack Obama.

China has threatened serious consequences should the bill actually push through, making it more likely that the White House will veto the legislation.
