Somali plane bomber used explosive laptop given to him by airport workers

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — Officials believe the mid-flight blast on a Somali passenger plane bound for Djibouti may have been caused by a bomb concealed inside a laptop.

Somali intelligence authorities on Sunday released security footage showing two workers at a Mogadishu airport holding what appears to be a laptop, while scouring a waiting area.

Suspected bomber Abdullahi Abdisalam Borleh walks into frame seconds later, limping slightly as he goes. The two airport workers approach him, and as one in an orange vest walks past, his companion hands off the laptop to the suspect.

Borleh, a Somali national, carried the explosive device onto the Daallo Airlines jet, detonating it fifteen minutes after takeoff, according to the Associated Press. The resulting explosion blew a hole near the right wing that sucked Borleh out of the aircraft, killing him.

Passengers were moved to the front and rear of the plane following the blast. Two people were reportedly injured in the explosion. The plane was forced to turn back and made an emergency landing at Mogadishu.

According to the pilot, the explosion occurred at 11,000 feet, but would have been more devastating had the bomb gone off at a higher altitude.

CNN reports that the attack is believed to have been instigated by Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, though officials have yet to determine whether Borleh was a direct member.

At least 20 people have been arrested in connection with the bombing, including the two airport workers seen delivering the explosive laptop to the suspect.
