Needle attack on New York subway latest in a string of violent incidents

NEW YORK — Random knife slashings and now a needle attack? What's going on on New York subways? On the evening of February 3, 2016, a 37-year-old woman, who requested anonymity, caught the R Train for her commute home and exited the subway system at the 49th St. and Seventh Avenue Station near Times Square.

As she was pushing through the turnstiles, she says she felt the sudden pain in her arm as a man brushed up against her. The victim described the possible attacker as a white man with short blonde hair, wearing a blue and plaid sweatshirt, blue jeans and carrying a black backpack.

Unsure of what had occurred, the woman went home and discovered a puncture wound. She instantly headed to a hospital where doctors confirmed she had been stabbed with something such as a needle or syringe.

Doctors treated her with drugs to fight hepatitis and prescribed HIV antiviral medication just in case the needle was infected. The woman says she "feels violated" and scared, but also said she's a "pretty tough cookie" who plans to continue carrying on with her normal life.

The NYPD says crime in New York City fell to its lowest levels in modern history in the year 2015, but crime on the city's transit system jumped 36% in January 2016 from the same period a year earlier. Authorities have promised to increase police presence at stations and on trains throughout New York.
