Mystery sniper believed to have killed three ISIS leaders in over ten days

SIRTE, LIBYA — Three ISIS leaders in Sirte, Libya were hunted down and killed by long range sniper shots over the course of ten days starting on January 23, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The city of Sirte is full of rumors that the deaths are connected, and a mystery sniper is responsible for the string of high level assassinations.

No one is sure if the shooter is one person, or a group of people.

Following the first assassination of a Sudanese official sharia judge outside a local hospital, an eyewitness told the al-Wasat website: "A state of terror prevailed among the Isil ranks after his death. They randomly shot in the air to scare inhabitants, while searching for the sniper."

On January 19, another ISIS leader was gunned down outside of his home in the coastal city of Sirte.

The latest shooting, which claimed the life of an ISIS commander from southern Libya, happened outside a mosque in the city center on January 23, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Guesses about who the sniper really is include the possibility that it might be a U.S. special forces soldier, a militiaman from a neighboring town, or a sniper who got plenty of practice during Libya's uprising against Muammar Gaddafi.

Since many locals in Sirte don't support their new rulers, some citizens are lauding the sniper.

Following the shootings, ISIS has executed and arrested several people, but stories about the mystery sniper abound.
