Fears after India’s surrogacy crackdown

The Indian government announced plans to ban surrogacy services for foreign couples in October 2015, sending notices to fertility clinics around the country to stop accepting overseas clients. Although the bill hasn't officially been passed, the new law has already been brought into force.
Thousands of surrogate babies were born in India every year, but the government believes that poor, illiterate women were being exploited.
Indeed, for many women, being a surrogate is one of the few ways for the desperately poor to earn money quickly.
However, with this new legislation, many observers now fear the whole industry will go underground.
