Spanish coast guard rescues 22 sailors stranded on listed ship
  • 8 years ago
SPAIN — The Spanish coast guard saved 22 sailors from a listed freighter on Tuesday. The Panamanian cargo ship, Modern Express, was enroute from Africa to France when strong winds and waves caused the vessel to list at 40 degrees, about 150 miles off the coast of Spain.

The crew sent out a distress signal and the Spanish coast guard responded with helicopter support to lift all 22 sailors to safety. One slip on the deck would have sent them right into the water.

The abandoned Modern Express, carrying 3600 tons of wood and construction equipment, drifted into French waters and will need to be towed to shore.
