Girl, 17, who fought off sex attacker with pepper spray faces charges

SONDERBORG, DENMARK — A 17-year-old girl who fought off a sex attacker with pepper spray has been told she will face charges by Danish police.
The unnamed girl, from the town of Sonderborg on Denmark's southern coast, was targeted by an English-speaking man near an asylum seekers' center at about 10 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Local, which cited a report in Denmark's TV Syd.
The man forced her to the ground, unbuttoned her pants and tried to undress her — but she hit back with pepper spray and fended him off, the Local reported.
Police told the girl pepper spray is illegal for private citizens to possess and she will likely face a 500 krone, or roughly $75, fine.
"It is illegal to possess and use pepper spray, so she will likely be charged for that," local police spokesman Knud Kirsten told TV Syd, according to the Local.
The news comes amid tensions in the town, with women complaining of harassment by male refugees at the asylum center.
The Buddy Holly nightclub in Sonderborg has even adopted the policy of only admitting clubbers who speak Danish, German or English, the Local reported.
The man who allegedly attacked the girl remains at large, and it is unknown whether he is an asylum seeker or resident of the center.
Outrage greeted the news on social media, with thousands of posters on TV Syd's comments section saying the girl was acting in self-defense. Some even offered to pay her fine, according to the Local.
