Witness says Oregon standoff spokesman 'LaVoy' Finicum charged at officers before being shot dead

BURNS, OREGON — The spokesman for a group of armed activists who occupied a wildlife refuge in Oregon earlier this month was shot dead by law enforcement during a deadly highway shooting near Burns early this week.

While some allege he was killed in cold blood, an eyewitness posted a video on social media disputing the claim that the man died on his knees with his hands up.

The Oregonian reports that on Tuesday afternoon, a two-car convoy led by Arizona rancher Robert "LaVoy" Finicum was travelling north along Highway 395, about 20 miles north of Burns, when it was stopped by the FBI and state police.

Mark McConnell, the driver of the second vehicle, was with Ammon Bundy, the leader of the protest, and Brian Cavalier when agents apprehended all three of them.

Finicum's truck was 200 yards away, and McConnell claimed he saw someone already in handcuffs outside the vehicle when the pickup suddenly took off with the remaining passengers.

The truck encountered a roadblock further down the road, and ended up getting stuck in a snowbank after attempting to go around it.

Finicum reportedly got out of the vehicle and charged at police. He was shot and killed, while Ammon Bundy's brother, Ryan Bundy, sustained non life-threatening injuries.

Authorities detained members of the convoy group, though McConnell and an 18-year-old passenger in Finicum's truck were later released. The rest were arrested and booked into into the Multnomah County Detention Center.
