COBB COUNTY, GEORGIA — A Georgia state trooper and a suspect were shot on Wednesday afternoon following a 10 mile high-speed chase along the I-75 in Cobb County.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the chase began when trooper Jacob Fields spotted a black Chevrolet Silverado travelling southbound at speeds of around 98 miles per hour. When he attempted to pull the vehicle over it sped off.

The chase ended around 10 miles later when the suspect vehicle hit a civilian driver as police vehicles tried to box it in.

The suspect, identified as Israel Vladimir Rodriguez, then exited his vehicle and began shooting, engaging in an exchange of fire with the troopers, police told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Trooper Fields was reportedly hit twice, once in the abdomen below his bulletproof vest and once in the leg. The suspect was also hit in the abdomen. Both men were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Trooper Fields, a three-year veteran of the force, is recovering and is expected to be discharged in two to three days, police said.

Rodriguez received surgery and was in the hospital's intensive care unit but is expected to make a full recovery. He's facing charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and several others, reported the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
