BURNS, OREGON — Local media reports say on member of the anti-government protest at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was killed during a standoff with police on Tuesday, while another sustained a gunshot wound. In total, eight were arrested in relation to the incident.

According to authorities, the shooting took place during a bid to arrest the leader of the protest, Ammon Bundy.

Local reports stated that Bundy was on his way to a community meeting in John Day, Oregon, where he was scheduled to be a guest speaker, when authorities stopped his vehicle. Bundy was traveling with eight other people in two vehicles when they were stopped along Highway 395 around 4:25 p.m. local time (0025 GMT), the FBI said.

Local reports said everyone surrendered to the officials except Ryan Bundy, Bundy's brother, and Robert "LaVoy" Finicum, the spokesperson for the protest. It is unclear who fired the first shot, but gunfire that broke out resulted in Finicum being killed and Ryan Bundy sustaining a gunshot wound to his arm, according to The Washington Post.

NBC News reported that carloads of people had left the protest site at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, but Reuters reported that a handful who vowed to stay remained.

FBI agents set up a perimeter on Tuesday night around the refuge with the intention of arresting any unauthorized people from attempting to travel into the refuge.
