Armed shutdown of Naval Medical Center might be false alarm

SAN DIEGO — Early Tuesday, Jan. 26, Naval Medical Center San Diego reported an active shooter in one of its building, but two hours later no evidence of a shooter has been found.
An alert was posted on the hospital's Facebook page around 8 a.m. stating, "An active shooter has just been been reported in building #26 at Naval Medical Center San Diego. All occupants are advised to run, hide or fight."
Three shots were reported to have been fired in basement of Building #26, which houses the Security Pass and Decal office and is mostly used as barracks. Naval officials later stated that the initial report was made by one caller from within the building.
Shortly after the alert was posted the hospital was shut down.
The hospital is located centrally near Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. While visitors were warned of the reports, business resumed at both the park and zoo. An hour after initial reports, three local high schools were put on lockdown for about 30 minutes, but normal business has since resumed as well.
At the same time, Navy officials announced that the entire complex was secured including its childcare facilities. Building #26 underwent an intensive sweep with the assistance of K9s.
At 10 a.m., Navy Region Southwest PIO Kevin Dixon told Fox 5 News that following the first sweep of the building, Naval officials found no injuries, deaths or signs of gunfire. San Diego SWAT personnel also began facilitating an evacuation.
Naval Base Commanding Officer Curt Jones confirmed Dixon's statements in a press conference shortly after stating, "At this time we've found nothing that indicates shots fired in the building."
Jones said that officials are continuing to look into the situation and have yet to confirm the cause of any sounds similar to gunfire or deny the presence of a shooter.
"I would characterize it as someone thought they heard something and made reports," he said of initial reports. "At which time we took the appropriate steps that we take when we have reports along those times."
Medical personnel were allowed to be admitted on the hospital grounds to resume work.
The medical center has a staff of more than 6,500 people, including military, civilians, contractors and volunteers, according to its website.
