Russian Man Hopes to Become First Paralympic Ice Skater

24-year-old Fedor Merkulyev lost his leg in 2013 nearly all the way to his hip while working on a railway line. In a twist of fate, his disability gave him a new lease on life and he took up cycling, climbing, and ice skating, becoming the first person in Russia to ice skate using a prosthesis that extends above the knee. Fedor learned that ice skating is one of the only winter sports still not officially represented at the Paralympic Games and has made it his life's mission to compete as one of the first Paralympic speed skaters.
