Secret US controlled airbase in Syria gets runway extension to support Kurds
  • 8 years ago
Rmeilan, Syria — Security analysts Stratfor have released satellite photos purporting to show recent work being done to extend a US controlled runway in northeast Syria.

A spokesperson for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a rebel group allied with the US, told Al Jazeera that the group handed over control of Rmeilan airfield, in northeastern Syria province of Hasakah, to US forces. Satellite photos released by security analyst website Stratfor show recent construction being done to extend the airfield located near Syria's borders with Iraq and Turkey.

Originally used for agricultural flights in the area, the old runway at Rmeilan was 700 meters long, making it suitable for small aircraft. The extended runway is 1,315 meters long, large enough to accommodate cargo planes, fighter jets, or drones.

The airfield, which had been under Kurdish control for two years, is close to the ISIS controlled Iraqi city of Mosul. The SDF spokesperson told Al Jazeera that the US would use the airfield to support his group, which is fighting ISIS.

Al Jazeera reports that US Central Command denied US forces control any airfield in Syria.
