Living to and past the age of 100 is an astounding feat, but one that is becoming significantly more common.

According to a CDC report, the number of centenarians in the nation has boomed since the dawn of the millennium, rising from roughly 50,000 in 2000 to over 70,000 in 2014. 

Back in the 1980, there were only roughly 15,000 living individuals aged 100 or greater. 

In addition to more people making it to the milestone, a greater number of those that do are living longer afterwards. 

Between 2008 and 2014, the death rate among the women in the group declined by 14% and dropped 20% for men. 

The new numbers mark a significant reversal from the previous trend.
