Poland: Government tightens control of journalists and judges
  • 8 years ago
Poland's new government has changed how the courts work and passed a law giving it direct control over hiring and firing in state media. Critics cry out that the ruling Law and Justice party is taking law and justice literally into its own hands and trying to stifle democratic freedoms. Supporters, however, say the government is right to uphold Catholic and national values and should be allowed to show some independence from Brussels.
In Brussels, leaders meet to decide whether or not Poland is breaking EU rules and if so, what can be done about it.
Our guests discuss the state of democracy and media freedoms in Poland.
A programme presented by Eve Irvine
Produced by Isabelle Romero and Jean-Christophe Felt
