HOUSTON — An Iraqi who had been granted refugee status in the United States has been indicted for allegedly planning to attack malls in Houston.

Omar Faraj Saeed Al Hardan, a 24-year-old Palestinian who was born in Iraq, has been charged with attempting to provide support to a designated terrorist organisation.

According to his indictment, Al Hardan entered in the United States in 2009 and was granted Legal Permanent Resident status in 2011.

Citing testimony at his bond hearing on Thursday, KHOU reported that Al Hardan allegedly told an informant he wanted to set off a bomb at two Houston malls, possibly the Sharpstown and the Galleria, by hiding it in a trash can, a compared it to the Boston bombing. He also allegedly told the informant he wanted to make the bombs for ISIS, so he could kill people.

The informant also testified that Al Hardan received weapons training in November of 2014 on a farm outside Houston, KHOU reports.

The government presented a photograph showing that al Hardan had taken an oath on the Quran to ISIS, and another photograph of an ISIS flag, camo clothing and a prayer list in Al Hardan's closet, KHOU reports.

Prosecutors further allege that Al Hardan was in contact with another Iraqi refugee in California, Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab, and that the two men talked on Facebook about getting weapons training and going to Syria to fight with ISIS, KHOU reports.

According to KHOU, the Al Hardan and Al-Jayab talked on Facebook from April 2013 to October 2014 about getting weapons training and going to Syria to fight alongside ISIS.

If convicted, al Hardan could spend up to 25 years in jail.
