BAGHDAD, IRAQ — Islamic militant group ISIS claimed responsibility for an attack on a shopping mall in Baghdad on Monday evening that left at least 17 people dead.

The attack took place near the Jawaher mall in a largely Shi'ite district of eastern Baghdad.

Reports said a car bomb went off near the mall, killing seven people including two Iraqi police officers.

Two gunmen then reportedly opened fire inside the mall, killing a further five people.

Several others, including the two gunmen were then killed when they detonated their suicide vests.

The Islamic state later claimed responsibility for the Baghdad attack, and said it also carried out two further bomb attacks in the city of Muqdadiya that left another 23 people dead.

The attacks come amid a series of setbacks for the terrorist group, which last month lost control of Ramadi in western Iraq.
