Man wearing fake suicide vest and wielding a knife gunned down in Paris street

PARIS — A man wearing a fake suicide belt and wielding a knife was shot dead when he tried to enter a northern Paris police station on Thursday was wearing a fake explosive belt, a police union source told Reuters.
The shooting took place outside a police station in the Goutte-d'Or area of the French capital's 18th arrondissement.
"The man did have a belt, but it was a fake. The bomb-disposal unit confirmed it was a fake," the police union source told Reuters.
France 24 reported a witness who was around 50 metres from the police station said he clearly heard the man cry "Allahu Akbar" (God is great).
Images that later surfaced show a police bomb disposal robot by the man's body after the shooting. The neighbourhood was also locked down after the incident, with two schools on the same street as the police station closed, France 24 reported education officials as saying. Nearby metro stations were also closed.
The incident took place just moments after President Francois Hollande had given a speech to security forces in an another part of Paris to mark the anniversary of last year's deadly Islamist militant attacks on the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine in the French capital.
