Just when you thought you couldn't hate Assad any more, there's this

MADAYA / SYRIA — Less than an hour's drive from Damascus, Syria is the mountain town of of Madaya where at least 23 people have died from starvation and hundreds more suffer from malnutrition.

Local residents say their town has been under siege by members of Bashar al-Assad's regime for several months. Madaya's 40,000 residents have resorted to eating leaves and grass to survive. With rice prices at more than $100 per pound, it's not surprising to hear some families have resorted to eating their pets.

The story has drawn further attention to this graffiti tag, first spotted in 2014, which reads, "Submit or starve," signed by Assad's soldiers. Demonstrators in Madaya have taken to the streets to protest the siege of their city.

The BBC reports that the Syrian government has agreed to let the UN deliver aid to some 400,000 people in 15 besieged areas. Let's hope it gets to the people who need it, as soon as possible.
