Man saves deer from drowning in icy river

MINNEAPOLIS — Video of a man rescuing a deer trapped in an icy river from certain death has gone viral.

Steven Peterson was driving over a bridge when he spotted the deer crawling on the ice in Minnesota's frozen Kettle River, WCCO reported.

Peterson, who is deaf, created a selfie video and explained in American Sign Language that he would rescue the deer.

He then crawled onto the ice and tied a rope around the deer. With a little huffing and puffing, he pulled the frost-covered doe to safety.

Peterson named the deer "Miss Ice River," according to WCCO.

Animal welfare group PETA announced on Tuesday it would give Peterson a Compassionate Action Award for saving the deer's life, WCCO reported.
