El Nino storms slam into Southern California, causing onslaught of heavy rain and mudslides

LOS ANGELES — Three El Nino-fueled storms have slammed into Southern California this week, drowning the parched state in flood water and mud. More than 13 inches of snow were expected in certain parts of the state, causing local schools to be closed early.

While flood warnings remain in effect on Wednesday, the excess downpour has caused chaos on the roads, making them increasingly difficult to navigate. NBC San Diego reports that the flooding has been so bad in some parts of Southern California that lifeguards were called in to rescue people from cars trapped in the mud and water.

The storm that hit on Wednesday also brought with it the chance of a tornado, which is an unusual site in Southern California. At least one tornado reportedly touched down in Hollister, California early Wednesday morning. Local news station KSBW reports that the tornado was weak but still did some damage to infrastructure in the area.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the National Weather Service estimated that Los Angeles will get between 2 and 3.5 inches of rain over the next 16 days. The city has expanded its shelter resources to try to accommodate the tens of thousands of homeless individuals who sleep on the streets.

Do you live in Southern California? What's your El Nino story?
