This play tells the story of a beautiful girl‘s troubled life in the earlier part of last century. The heroine, Bai Yuhe, comes from a wealthy family, and is engaged when very young. Right after her wedding, her husband is dying. To save him, she asks Dan Fu for help. It’s said that Dan Fu gets a panacea formulation while serving the Emperor as a eunuch in the royal palace. However, because of the deep enmity between Dan Fu and Yuhe’s in-laws in the past, Dan Fu grasps this opportunity to seek revenge. He doesn’t give Yuhe the formulation but slanders her instead, spreading rumors about an affair between Yuhe and his adopted son, Dan Zhongan. Yuhe is then driven out of her in-laws’ home, displaced, and almost becomes a prostitute. Misery loves company, she goes through her husband’s death, her son’s kidnapping, and schemes against her one after another. To save her son, she meets the kidnappers alone. Her courage and beauty attract many people, including her enemies. Good begets good, Yuhe finally finds her soul mate, and they live happy ever after.
It’s the Chinese version of Downton Abbey, full of love, hatred, passion and enmity. A masterpiece of the year!
