Paschimottanasana is a very good form of exercise for those suffering from menstrual problems. This asana helps to strengthen the entire back and gives stability to the body.

History

History has it that this pose was started in the 11th century by Gorakshanath. It is a very complete yoga posture as per the Shiva Samhita.

Meaning

Pashchim in Sanskrit means west and in the body it is the back side. Uttana means to straighten oneself. Asana means a posture so Paschimottanasana means to stretch the back portion of the body to the fullest.

Technique

The pose starts with sitting in the Dandasana pose.
Now keep the hands on the toes and breathe in with great force.
Stay calm and relaxed and now try to touch the head to the knees.
Now breathe out and repeat this till the head is in between both your knees.
Now you can try to remain in this position after some practice.
Begin by remaining for a minute and gradually increase it to three minutes.
Breathe out and come back to the initial position.
