Abused kitten rescued after being dyed purple and used as chew toy

REDWOOD, CALIFORNIA — An eight week old kitten, nicknamed Smurf for his bluish-indigo dyed fur, is starting the new year right with lots of love and attention.

The tiny feline has come a long way, days after being found inside a cardboard box with multiple puncture wounds all over his body and weighing less than two pounds, according to CNN.

Smurf received surgery and extensive medical care at Nine Lives, a no-kill shelter. He wasn't beaten or strangled, but the multiple bite marks suggest he was used as a chew toy.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, doctors believe he was dipped in indigo fabric dye, and are still trying to get the color out of his fur, which they think is originally black or gray. The resilient kitty is on the mend, though, and making friends. His new best friend is a blind cat named Wanda who he likes to massage on a daily basis. The two friends will be sent to foster care in the coming weeks.

Smurf has received an outpouring of support and adoption offers from all over the world since Nine Lives shared his plight. The shelter is concerned Smurf has only received attention because he's purple, but hopes his story sends a message about the reality of animal cruelty, reports CNN.
