150-strong militia occupy federal building in Oregon
  • 8 years ago
BURNS, OREGON — Following a 300-strong protest in Burns, Oregon, a group of militiamen — claiming to be 150 in size — occupied the Malheur National Wildlife refuge, a federal property operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Reuters reported.

According to Reuters, the occupation and protest were against the prosecution of ranchers Dwight and Steven Hammond. They were convicted in 2012 for setting fire to public land to protect their property from wildfires. A judge ruled their prison terms were insufficient and ordered them to return to prison, Monday, the Oregonian reported.

The militia have food supplies and a power generator, reported Oregon Public Broadcasting. It's unclear if they are armed.

According to the Oregonian, the militia has said they are prepared to occupy the building for years. Authorities are currently working on a solution to the situation.

According to Reuters, brothers Ammon and Ryan Bundy are among the building's occupiers. Members of the Bundy family had previously been involved in an armed standoff with authorities in 2014 over grazing fees. However federal agents backed down, citing safety concerns and returned seized cattle to the Bundys.
