One of the greatest tourist attractions of the Mediterranean, Venice is becoming a victim of its own success. With nearly 25 million visitors a year, it is more and more difficult for the city, built on wooden stakes, to manage material and logistical demands. At the heart of the problem are giant cruise ships, accused of inflicting permanent damage to Venice's waterways and delicate structure.
