Turbulence injures 20 on Air Canada Flight 88, plane diverts to Calgary

TORONTO, CANADA — At least 20 people were reportedly injured on an Air Canada flight that was hit by heavy turbulence on Wednesday, prompting the aircraft to make an unscheduled landing in Calgary, reported CBC News.
Air Canada flight 88 was travelling to Toronto when it departed from Shanghai at 8.23 p.m. ET on Wednesday, according to FlightAware, a real-time flight tracking website.
The Calgary Herald reported that a preliminary passenger list from Air Canada indicated the flight was carrying 332 passengers and 19 crew members.
During the flight, the aircraft encountered heavy turbulence that resulted in at least 20 passengers suffering from neck and back injuries. The plane made an unscheduled emergency landing at Calgary in Alberta, Canada.
Passenger Connie Gelber told the Calgary Herald the journey was a "flight from hell." She said the passenger beside her was thrown from her seat during the turbulence.
According to CTV News, eight passengers had been taken away on stretchers. Emergency and airport officials later said emergency responders assessed 25 passengers. Among the patients taken to hospital were three children. None of the injuries were life-threatening, reported the Calgary Herald.
Two investigators have been sent by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada to review the contents in the black box and interview Air Canada employees to determine the cause of the injuries, reported the Calgary Herald.
