Every New Year's Eve in Rio de Janeiro, thousands of Brazilians go to the ocean to celebrate Yemanjá, the Afro-Brazilian deity of the religion Candomblé. While Candomblé has just over 100,000 active practitioners in Brazil, many of its traditions have been incorporated into the wider Brazilian culture.
