Peru: Neo-liberal Development Projects Spark Social Protests
  • 8 years ago
Social protests grew in numbers and intensity in 2015 in Peru. Since April, campesinos in the Tambo Valley have engaged in major and militant mobilizations against the Tia Maria mining project, which they charge with inflicting environmental damage. Other protests have targeted the government for concessioning indigenous land to multinational oil companies. Demonstrators criticize President Ollanta Humala who reneged on campaign promises to halt such projects and whose approval rating has plummeted to 11%. Rael Mora reports from Lima. teleSUR
