HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA — Christmas morning took a turn for the gruesome after authorities investigating the shooting of a Bay Area police officer discovered a dead body inside the suspect's truck.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that on Friday, a suspicious looking man was seen walking away from a U-Haul truck with a broken window. The truck was inside a parking structure near the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station in Hayward.

When a pair of police officers approached him for questioning, the man, whipped out a gun and shot at the officers before attempting to flee. One officer got hit in the arm, while the other returned fire, wounding the suspect in the hip and side.

The suspect, identified as Charles Goetting, is on probation for burglary, drug-dealing, and weapons violations, according to NBC Bay Area. He was subdued by both officers in the street, and later brought to the hospital for his injuries, along with the wounded officer.

Police discovered a backpack with burglary tools and a mask in the U-Haul truck, along with the dead body of an unidentified male.

The suspect used a stolen gun in the shooting and was believed to have swapped out the truck's license plates, reports KGO. Authorities say he will be charged with attempted murder.
