Mexico: Conservative Catholic Leader Favors Medical Use of Marijuana

On Sunday, Mexico’s conservative Catholic Archbishop Norberto Rivera surprised the nation by giving his blessing to the medical use of marijuana. A debate over legalization was sparked in the country when four plaintiffs won a historic Supreme Court decision in early November recognizing that their rights were violated by the penalization of the cultivation and use of marijuana. Many proponents of legalization charge that penalization fosters the spread of organized crime and the systemic violence associated with it. They say it is time to fully regulate consumption.
