Baltimore cop punches the crap out of 19-year-old man for resisting arrest

BALTIMORE — At 2 a.m. on December 19, Zachary Blumenstein was being arrested by police after a heated altercation outside a popular restaurant. In attempting to restrain him, the cops used what some are calling excessive force. Thanks to video footage recorded by a bystander who uploaded the violent takedown to Facebook, the incident is now under review by internal affairs.
The police say the incident began about 40 minutes prior to the arrest, when Blumenstein was in a verbal altercation outside the Greene Turtle Restaurant and Bar, that had five men trying to hold him back. Officers stepped in and told Blumenstein to leave the area, but shortly afterward they reportedly saw him pushing another man into the street. When the cops stepped in to arrest him, they say Blumenstein was resisting, which led to them escalating their use of force.
Upon reviewing the video, which was recorded and posted to Facebook by user Aleia Libao, the Towson police chief admits he's "concerned about the officer's use of a closed fist to strike the suspect several times."
The police department's internal affairs division is now conducting of a review of the officer who threw the punches. Zachary Blumenstein was arrested for resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace, and faces charges for disobeying a police officer.
