A closer look at France's state of emergency

France has been living under a state of emergency since the November 13 attacks in Paris. This means police can carry out raids and impose control orders on suspects without obtaining permission from a judge. Public gatherings and demonstrations are also banned. Voted by the French Parliament, the powers are in place for at least 3 months. While many French agree with the government that such measures are necessary, rights groups have expressed concern about them becoming permanent.
