SHENZHEN, CHINA — At least 59 people are missing after a landslide hit an industrial park in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen on Sunday, according to state-run news agency Xinhua.

Local government officials say although at least 20 buildings were buried, about 900 people were evacuated successfully and four people were pulled from the debris with no major injuries. China's Public Security Bureau's firefighting unit said an area of of 20,000 square metres was covered with soil after the landslide.

Some 1,500 workers are helping rescue efforts, according to a comment the Guangming New Area Government posted on its official page on the Sina Weibo micro-blogging site.

So far, there has been no official report on the number of fatalities, if any. Ren Jiguang, the deputy chief of Shenzhen's public security bureau, told state broadcaster CCTV that most people had been moved to safety before the landslide hit.

Xinhua reported a local worker as saying he saw "red earth and mud running towards the company building". Meanwhile, another resident living around 4 km from the site of the landslide described hearing a "loud explosion" at around noon when the disaster took place.

Local media reported that the landslide may have been triggered by loose soil in the area, which was dug up over the last two years during construction work. However, no official word on the cause of the landslide has been given.
