Head lice are one of the most common problems that affect children all over the world. In the United States alone, six to 12 million kids get head lice each year. Although they are not harmful, they can be very irritating, as they multiply very rapidly and are resistant to many kinds of treatment. If you want to get rid of head lice, you have to be patient and brace yourself for months of vigilant head lice removal. If you want to know how to get rid of head lice fast or in just a matter of weeks, here are some things that you can do:

Constantly nitpick and comb hair. One of the basic ways that you can do to get rid of head lice is to buy a special fine-toothed comb, and comb your hair to remove lice and nits. While this may not be the fastest way to remove head lice and nits, you have to do this in conjunction with all the other treatments. Remember that you cannot get rid of head lice until you have removed every single egg in your child’s hair.

Apply olive oil or mayonnaise. They contain ingredients that can suffocate lice, but since lice can survive for hours without breathing, leave them on overnight to be effective.

Afterward, it is easier to loosen lice from the hair shaft with your hand or a fine-toothed comb. Coat your hair and scalp completely with mayonnaise or olive oil until your hair is completely saturated. Wring out any excess and wrap your hair with plastic wrap. Leave it on your hair overnight, but do this with caution since it can get messy. The next day, vigorously wash your hair with shampoo to remove all the mayonnaise or oil, and then towel dry your hair. Use a special comb to remove all the dead lice and nits on your hair.

Use white vinegar. You could also apply distilled white vinegar on your hair in conjunction with olive oil or mayonnaise. After applying mayonnaise or olive oil overnight and rinsing it with shampoo and water, coat your hair and scalp completely with vinegar. Leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing and washing with shampoo. Vinegar loosens the grip of lice and nits on your hair, making them easy to comb out. However, do not do this if you have open sores on your scalp, since vinegar can cause a burning sensation.

Dry your hair with a hair dryer. Studies show that blow-drying your hair is great for killing almost 98 percent of the nits in your hair. It can also kill half the lice on your head. Immediately after shampooing and combing your hair, use a hair dryer to increase the chances of removing head lice and nits. Just be careful of doing this after using a chemical lice treatment, since some chemical treatments might contain flammable ingredients.

Use coconut oil. Coconut oil is fatal for both adult lice and small lice. Simply apply coconut oil onto your scalp and damp hair. Cover your head with a shower cap for 12 hours before shampooing and rinsing thoroughly. Do not forget to use a special comb to remove all dead lice and nits. Not only will coconut oil eradicate the lice in your hair, it will also make your hair smell good and look soft and shiny.

Remember that after learning how to get rid of head lice fast, you have to continue the chosen regimen for at least two weeks. Always check your hair for the presence of lice and nits. Just be patient with your regimen and results will come faster than expected.
