WASHINGTON — A United States Secret Service officer formerly assigned to the White House was shot and killed on Tuesday in Washington D.C.

Arthur Baldwin was shot multiple times in an attempted robbery in Southwest Washington on Tuesday afternoon. He was rushed to a hospital where he later died, NBC Washington reported.

According to the Washington Post, Baldwin had worked for the Secret Service for eight years and had recently been assigned to the White House. He had been on administrative leave after he was arrested for an alleged break-in in April.

Baldwin allegedly tried to break into his girlfriend's home in 3200 block of D Street SE before fleeing the scene. Two windows and the hinges to a door of the home were damaged, according to a police report. After police arrived the scene, Baldwin returned to the home and requested to talk to his girlfriend. Police found his loaded service weapon in his car and he was arrested.

Police believe the shooting is not related to Baldwin's job or his alleged break-in, NBC Washington reported.
