Netherlands: ICJ Rules that Nicaragua Violated Costa Rica’s Sovereignt
  • 8 years ago
Costa Rica’s President Luis Guilermo Solis has expressed his satisfaction over the International Court of Justice’s ruling that Nicaragua violated Costa Rica’s sovereign territory by establishing a military presence in parts of a disputed waterway and that it must compensate its neighbor. The Court has also recognized Costa Rica’s sovereignty over a 2.5 square kilometer disputed territory known as Isla Calero on the border with Nicaragua. The ruling is the latest stage in a long running legal battle between the two countries, which have accused each other of territorial violations in the wetlands at the mouth of the San Juan River. teleSUR
