Researchers claim that domestic dogs likely emerged as a distinct species from gray wolves in southern East Asia some 33,000 years ago.

Domesticated dogs likely first emerged out of southern East Asia some 33,000 years ago, according to an international team of researchers. 
Publishing in the journal Cell Research, scientists studied the entire genome sequences of 58 dogs and wolves from around the world and discovered that genetic diversity predominates in the area comprising modern day Vietnam, Laos, northern Thailand and southern China.
