Argentina: Macri Appointment of Supreme Court Justices Sparks Backlash

Newly elected Argentine President Mauricio Macri's decision to appoint two Supreme Court justices without Senate approval has sparked a storm of criticism. Many accuse the right-wing Macri government of an anti-democratic maneuver, taking advantage of congress being in summer recess to fill the vacancies, in the process undermining the judiciary. While in the past, military dictators have made such appointments bypassing parliament, this is the first time a democratically elected president has done so.
