N.C. town rejects solar panels, afraid 'they'd suck up all the energy from the sun'

WOODLAND, NORTH CAROLINA — A North Carolina town has rejected a proposal to allow a solar farm to be constructed after residents at the Woodland Town Council expressed fears the panels would take away sunlight from the town.

According to the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald, the Woodland Town Council rejected a proposal, 3-1, to rezone a section of land north of the town into a manufacturing zone from a residential/agricultural zone, basically denying approval of the solar farm.

The Planning Board had suggested the land be rezoned to let Strata Solar Company construct a solar farm off of U.S. Highway 258.

The council had previously agreed to three other solar farms, with one now in the process of putting up its solar panels.

Solar companies are looking to Woodland because it is located near an electrical substation where power generated from the panels could be fed into the grid.

During the public comment period before the rezoning vote, town residents voiced their distrust and fear of solar panels.

June Mann, a retired Northampton science teacher, is worried that vegetation near solar panels won't get enough light for photosynthesis. She said she's seen areas near solar panels where vegetation is brown and dead because it did not receive enough sunlight.

Mann also said she was worried about the high number of cancer deaths in the area, saying no one could tell her that solar panels didn't cause cancer.

"I want to know what's going to happen," she said. "I want information. Enough is enough. I don't see the profit for the town."

Bobby Mann said the solar farms would suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not come to Woodland.

Strata then attempted to address the council and audience, but looks like we know how that turned out.

The council later voted for a moratorium on future solar farms.
