Authorities in Hidalgo County began their investigation in late October, after receiving a tip that Juanita Garcia’s 7-year-old daughter was not, in fact, ill.
They tracked Garcia’s attempts to gather money, both on social media and in person, and learned she had told a number of people that the child was suffering from terminal cancer.
