One dead after L.A. hotel birthday party erupts into deadly melee

LOS ANGELES — Guests at a swanky, downtown hotel in Los Angeles were awakened by sounds of gunfire and police sirens at about 2:20 a.m. on Sunday after a deadly shooting broke out, turning the building into the scene of an ongoing homicide investigation.
A shooting at the Standard Hotel early Sunday morning began after an altercation over access to a birthday party erupted between the 10th and 12th floor of the hotel. The fight then moved down to the lobby, where, according to NBC News, responding LAPD officers found three victims suffering from gunshot wounds near the elevators. One of the lobby's glass doors was shattered.
Officers found another shooting victim a few blocks away, near Olympic Boulevard and Hill Street. A preliminary investigation suggests that all four people were the victims of the same shooting, NBC News reported.
Almost eight hours after the shooting in a parking lot near the hotel, a hotel employee found a handgun, believed to be one of the weapons used in the shooting.
One shooting victim later died at a hospital, while a second was paralyzed. The remaining victims are in stable condition. None of the victims have been identified and no arrests have been made, which makes the case an ongoing investigation. NBC News reports that the LAPD hopes surveillance videos will help them find the shooter.
