Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Awesome U.S. Army missile intercept test mistaken for UFO

GALLUP, NEW MEXICO — A test missile launched from a base in New Mexico left behind a corkscrew-shaped contrail visible for hundreds of miles.

Around 6:55 a.m. on Thursday, an unarmed Juno missile was launched from Fort Wingate near Gallup, New Mexico. Aimed at White Sands Missile Range some 215 miles away, the missile was meant to be target practice for Patriot missiles, which were undergoing an upgrade, according to KOB4.

The Juno missile left a corkscrew-shaped contrail that was seen by residents in Arizona, Colorado and Nevada, among other Southwestern states, and even as far as 850 miles away in Southern California. The test missile disintegrated in midair after being successfully intercepted by a Patriot missile near White Sands, according to the Associated Press.

The Army put out a notice ahead of the launch so that residents would not be alarmed, but military officials still received numerous reports of the contrail being spotted in the sky, with some people asking if it was a UFO.
