Dash cam video: No charges for cop who shot fleeing suspect in the back

CHICAGO — The Chicago Police Department has released dash cam footage which shows a fleeing suspect being shot by a pursuing officer. Ronald Johnson was shot and killed by a Chicago police officer, George Hernandez, during a run-in with the law on October 12, 2014.

Officer Hernandez exited his police car and fired five times at Johnson, striking him twice. One bullet hit the fleeing suspect in the back of his leg and another entered his back shoulder, severing his jugular.

Police said Johnson was pointing a gun in the direction of officers who were pursuing him at the time he was shot. Officers recovered a 9mm handgun from Johnson at the scene.

Michael Oppenheimer, an attorney for the Johnson family, denies the claim that Johnson was armed at the time of the shooting and claims the 9mm was planted on him afterward.

People who were in the car with Johnson that night gave accounts that back up police claims that Johnson was armed.
