Party of Hugo Chavez loses landslide national assembly election in Venezuela

CARACAS, VENEZUELA — Venezuelans headed to the polls on Sunday for legislative elections and handed the party of Hugo Chavez its first national election loss in 17 years.
As of presstime, the opposition Roundtable of Democratic Unity, or MUD, had won at least 99 seats out of 167, while the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, or PSUV, had only won 46 seats. Twenty-two seats are still undecided due to very close races in those districts.
So, what happened to finally shake Chavismo's unassailable appeal to the electorate? For one thing, the price of oil tanked. Oil revenue makes up almost all of the Venezuelan government's budget. And, under Socialist rule, inflation has gotten so bad that stores can't even stock toilet paper anymore. Worst of all, the abysmal economy has led to crime in Venezuela running completely out of control.
At the wheel of this broke-down bus of an economy, you've got President Nicolas Maduro, who swears Chavez gave him the Mandate of Heaven. In a meeting broadcast on the network TeleSur, Maduro publicly recalled how the spirit of Chavez visited him in the form of a songbird. The anecdote was seen as touching or laughable depending on the viewer's attitude toward Chavez and birds.
After the last 22 seats are counted, if the MUD get 100 legislative seats, they'll be able to dismiss Maduro's cabinet ministers. If they get 111, they can call a referendum on keeping him in office.
