U.S. to deploy specialized forces to Iraq and Syria to fight Islamic State
  • 8 years ago
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States military will deploy specialized expeditionary targeting forces to Iraq in the effort to combat Islamic State, United States Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced in Congress on Tuesday.

While the Defense Secretary did not divulge the exact number of troops that will be deployed to Iraq, an official told NBC News that the force will be comprised of 100 to 150 U.S. special operations troops in an effort to put pressure on Islamic State militants.

In October, the U.S. announced it would send up to 50 special forces soldiers to northern Syria as military advisers. However, the announcement on Tuesday is a clear indication of an escalation in America's role in direct combat, according to Gary O'Donoghue, the Washington, D.C. political correspondent for BBC News.

The forces will conduct unilateral operations in Syria while, at the same time focusing on strengthening the Iraqi Security Forces and defending Iraq's borders. Its objective would be to conduct raids, gather intelligence, free hostages or prisoners, and kill or capture ISIS leaders in both Iraq and Syria, according to Carter.

American commandos will also assist and accompany Iraqi and Kurdish soldiers on their operations against ISIS.

No timetable was given on when the special operations forces will begin to arrive in Iraq.
