Giant football-sized hernia removed from man's scrotum after 12 years

RABAT, MOROCCO — Doctors in Morocco removed a hernia from a man's scrotum that was hanging halfway down his thigh, according an article in the Journals of Medical Case Reports.

The man's hernia had grown larger than a football, reaching almost 12 inches long. He had refused to get surgery for the 12 years it was growing, but he finally caved because he had trouble walking, urinating and having sex.

According to the Journal of Medical Case Reports, operating on the rare inguinoscrotal hernia is difficult, even for experienced surgeons. When doctors at Mohammed V Military Hospital, Mohammed V University opened the man up, they found most of his colon, bladder, and small intestine inside of the hernia sac. They were able to put his organs back inside of his body, held in place by a piece of mesh. The man was placed in intensive care following the operation because he had trouble breathing, but he was discharged six days later.

"At his 6-month follow-up examination, the hernia repair was intact without signs of recurrence, scrotal hydrocele, or seroma," the article in the Journal of Medical Case Reports said.
