Footage has emerged of riot police - 'CRS' - intervening at Place de la République, Paris, France, during an unauthorised public gathering.

In the video, shot on Sunday afternoon, a large group of CRS officers in riot gear can be seen dispersing the crowd around the square.

Riot police officers can be seen climbing onto the monument which has been turned into a memorial for the victims of the attacks of the November 13 which sparked outrage amongst the protesters.

The gathering was organised as a climate march ahead of COP21 in Paris but soon turned into a protest against the 'state of emergency' that was declared in France and the ban on public gatherings that it entailed.

According to local media 289 people were arrested during the clashes.
